Born into a wealthy but troubled German Jewish family, Charlotte Salomon was preternaturally gifted, with a wild imagination and grand ambitions. The rise of the Nazis caused her to flee to  the South of France, where she found love and temporary safety but also discovered disturbing truths about her family's past. 

 

Contending with family demons and the peril of being a Jew in Europe, she created her masterpiece, Life? or Theatre?, composed of nearly a thousand gouaches depicting the lives of everyone near and dear to her. Believed by some to be the world's first graphic novel, it survived the war though Charlotte herself was killed in Auschwitz.
